A lot of stars live in L.A., or spend a lot of time here, so let's let them be our tour guides to another side of the city. From pre-game rituals to best place for a nightcap, we're looking for star picks from the everyday to the evanescent. To kick off our new feature, suit and boot for a spin around L.A. with Aubrey Plaza, the deadpan, 26-year-old scene stealer from "Parks and Recreation," "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World," and other don't-miss productions. Plaza has the effortless cool of an upstairs neighbor and more than enough chutzpah to hang with the boys. And, one day, she will enter an actual nightclub.

Any interesting rituals before you hit the town?

If I did, I would probably neti pot for 30 minutes and then stare at myself in the mirror.

After neti pot, what would be the ideal place for starter drinks?

Little Dom's [2128 Hillhurst Ave., Los Feliz]! They have the best drinks and atmosphere.

What's your current favorite nightclub?

I have never been to a nightclub.

Your favorite dive bar?

I like The Woods [1533 N. La Brea Ave., Hollywood]. But mostly because Mashti Malone's is right next door. I like ice cream a lot.

Before dessert, what's your favorite spot for dinner?

I love sushi and low-key places. Sushi Nozawa [11288 Ventura Blvd., Studio City] is one of my favorite places to go.

How about for a first date?

Alegria in Silver Lake [3510 W Sunset Blvd.]. It's comfortable and the food is amazing. Also, they have a selection of fresh fruit juices, which is a nice indication of what you're getting yourself into.

What about the all important late-night eats (a.k.a. fourth meal)?

Pho Citi [4319 W. Sunset Blvd., Silver Lake] is good late at night. Or Pacific Dining Car [1310 W. 6th St., Westlake] is excellent if you feel like eating lobster tail at 4 a.m. — which I always do.

Here's a situation many of us have found ourselves in: It's last last call and you're starving. Your options are reserved to greasy fast food or--even worse--the "danger dogs" sold by street vendors. Gross. Enter Pho Citi. Since 2009, Pho Citi has offered night owls a healthier, but just as delicious, alternative to late-night dining with 24-hour locations in Burbank, Glendale, Westwood, and Silver Lake. Now, we want to offer the same round-the-clock convenience to residents of West Hollywood, but we need your help!

We've applied for a 24-hour operating permit for our WeHo location and are scheduled to plead our case to the City of West Hollywood on March 15, 2011. Public support will help our cause, so please come out and show your support! Attendees will have a chance to voice their desire for twenty-PHO-seven access to delicious Vietnamese cuisine. WeHo residents will have more clout in their demands, so we'd especially appreciate locals coming out!

Customers may leave WeHo bars/clubs earlier to drive to a 24-hr joint in another part of town. Don't we want to keep customers in our city during these tough economic times?

While Black Friday and Cyber Monday both drive sales to national chains and larger retailers, Small Business Saturday, a national campaign sponsored by American Express OPEN, recognizes the importance of small, independently owned businesses to our national economy and local communities.
If you’re a small business, we don’t have to tell you about the impact you have on the economy. But here are just two examples:

Research conducted by the 3/50 project suggests that for every $100 spent in locally owned independent stores, $68 returns to the community through taxes, payroll, and other expenditures — far greater than the amount from national chains.

Does Buying a Big-Name Franchise Ensure Success?

What’s in a name? A lot. Go to nearly any corner of the world and say “McDonald’s,” and people will instantly think of the franchise’s sweeping golden arches. In a small Spanish town on the Mediterranean, the locals not only know what Burger King is, but can direct you to the closest one. Meanwhile, Subway has fed millions of consumers worldwide. Part of the appeal of investing in a franchise is that the products/services have already been researched and developed, the system is already in place, and a support network is available. But some franchises offer something far less tangible but just as important: a well-known name.

When researching franchise opportunities, what are the possible pros and cons associated with a well-known brand? Does buying a big-name franchise ensure a safe investment? We set out to find out.

Pros:

You get instant recognition from customers: When you buy a well-known brand, the name speaks volumes. Little education about your product or service is needed, says Joel Libava, a franchise advisor. In addition, extensive marketing is unnecessary, unlike with an unknown brand where at least 25 percent of your time will entail sales and marketing, according to Tom Scarda, a franchise consultant.

You’ll have more bargaining power: Having the weight of a big name brand behind you can greatly increase your power to negotiate. Landlords, especially, are drawn to the idea of having big-name tenants, says Scarda. Libava agrees, saying, “Commercial real estate representatives pretty much jump for joy with the prospect of having a big-name tenant. It helps them attract other tenants, and sometimes they even feel that it’s a lower-risk proposition for them.”

It may be easier to access capital: Well-known franchise brands are familiar to most lending institutions’ underwriters, says Libava, so getting access to capital might be easier and more clear-cut. “Bankers are more apt to lend you money for startup and expansion,” agrees Scarda, “because they feel comfortable knowing the concept.”

Cons:

A big name means a big investment: If you want the backing of a big-name brand, you’d better be ready to pay for it. “The systems may be more sophisticated, which means that they are more expensive to put in place, and the franchise fees and royalties may be a little higher than average,” explains Libava. In addition, says Scarda, the franchisor may require you to make a multi-unit investment and set up shop in a highly visible location where rent is usually more expensive.

This is my local spot. It’s in North Hollywood, which is a short drive from my place. I travel a lot so I try to eat as healthy as I can while I’m in L.A. I eat here at least twice a week. I usually order the garlic pepper soy chicken with brown rice.

I eat Pho three times a week. It’s my hangover remedy. I like to try to stay away from Hollywood after spinning. And this place is open 24 hours. It’s perfect. I love putting tons of sriracha sauce on my Pho after a night out.

Umami, also referred to as savoriness, has been proposed as one of the basic tastes sensed by specialized receptor cells present on the human and animal tongue. Umami (旨味?) is a loanword from Japanese meaning "good flavor" or "good taste" (noun).[1] In English, however, "brothy", "meaty", or "savory" have been proposed as alternative translations.[2][3] Inasmuch as it describes the flavor common to savory products such as meat, cheese, and mushrooms, umami is similar to Brillat-Savarin's concept of osmazome, an early attempt to describe the main flavoring component of meat as extracted in the process of making stock.

The umami taste is due to the detection of the carboxylate anion of glutamic acid, a naturally occurring amino acid common in meat, cheese, broth, stock, and other protein-heavy foods. Salts of glutamic acid, known as glutamates, easily ionize to give the same carboxylate form and therefore the same taste. For this reason, they are used as flavor enhancers. The most commonly used of these is monosodium glutamate (MSG). While the umami taste is due to glutamates, 5'-ribonucleotides such as guanosine monophosphate (GMP) and inosine monophosphate (IMP) greatly enhance its perceived intensity. Since these ribonucleotides are also acids, their salts are sometimes added together with glutamates to obtain a synergistic flavor enhancement effect.[2][4]

When it comes to pho, a Vietnamese would have the distinct advantage of knowing how to eat it. Regardless of whether he or she grew up in the homeland or in an immigrant household overseas, he or she would have a mother or a grandmother who made this heart-filling noodle soup for breakfast each day, cooked using snippets of a recipe and with memories of how it is done in their own mother's kitchen. Since I'm on this tangent about acquired tastes ie. weird food combinations, it seemed only fitting to post my recipe for chanh muoi (Vietnamese salty lemonade). It's on the menu at most Vietnamese restaurants so if I've now stirred your curiosity, you can order it the next time you go. You can also find jars of this at the Asian grocery store. Since I'm blessed with an uncle who has a Meyer lemon tree, you know I had to make my own!

What is franchising?

Franchising can be described as a 'business marriage' between a 'franchisee' and a 'franchisor'. As the franchisee - the purchaser of the franchise - you pay an initial investment for the licensed rights to operate under an established brand, and to be trained and supported by a central franchisor. The 'marriage' is protected by a Franchise Agreement which provides you with an exclusive territory for a set period of time on a renewable basis.

Because you are investing in a proven and developed business concept, there is rarely a requirement for relevant industry or business management experience. Rather franchising is providing you with a route into business ownership with the back-up of a larger organisation.

The Franchise Agreement provides for training in the operation of a business and the implementation of the franchise concept. This is followed by ongoing support in activities such as launching the business, sourcing stock, marketing campaigns and attaining sales contracts.

The franchisor maintains an interest in your business through the collection of a Management Service Fee - typically a small percentage of your turnover. This provides the incentive and the funding for the franchisor to maintain network support initiatives such as national marketing, ongoing training and product development, freeing you to concentrate on building a successful business.

Remember that not all franchise systems are necessarily well thought out or well tested. This is great recipe for the most delectable homemade srircha (with a cute twitter connection)... ::REaD THE ENTIRE aRTICLE HERE::

Chili Hot Sauce Recipe – Sriracha style
*note: this recipe all varies depending on the chili’s (red jalapenos, habanero’s, etc…). Every chili pepper has a different heat level, so you must be the judge of the amount of spice you prefer. Start your first batch with smaller chili pepper quantities to familiarize yourself with the heat level of your chili peppers.
Ingredients:
1 c thai red chili peppers (about 100 grams). *Start with less (about half) if you want a more mild, gentle hot sauce
4-5 med. cloves of Garlic (crushed or minced)
2 med Shallots (minced)
1 T Vegetable Oil
2 – 8 oz. (or 1- 15 oz.) can of Tomato Sauce
1 T Fish Sauce (don’t skimp out on this!) or use Soy Sauce (for vegetarians. But if you can, try to use the Fish Sauce.
3 T Rice Vinegar
3 T Sugar

1. Remove stems of chili peppers, rinse clean. Blot dry with paper towel. Wearing rubber gloves, mince the chili peppers. The smaller the cut, the smoother your final sauce will be.

2. In sauce pan, heat oil then add minced garlic and shallots. Over medium-high heat saute for a about 1 minute or until light brown and fragrant. (don’t burn your garlic!)

3. Add tomato sauce and minced chili peppers. Let sauce come to a simmer then lower heat to keep at a low simmer. Add fish sauce, vinegar, and sugar. Mix well.

4. Continue simmering sauce for about 5 minutes. This will break down the chili peppers and soften them to create the smooth consistency.

5. Remove from heat and allow to cool completely.

6. Transfer sauce to blender and blend till smooth or until most of the chili pepper skin and seeds break down- preferably on the “liquefy” mode.

7. Taste the hot sauce. Further customize the hot sauce to your liking: add more sugar, vinegar or water. Blend one last time till smooth. Pour into clean, air tight jar and refrigerate. Use within about 1 week.

(For immediate release) Glendale, CA -- Pho Citi Noodle Soups will be opening an additional location near Americana at Brand complex in Glendale. This will be the third store in the popular restaurant chain, which is currently offering franchise opportunities. The hip 24-hour noodle house, slated to open before December 30th 2009 will feature modern and organic furnishings set in an upbeat and friendly environment. Pho Citi is a brand that sets itself apart from traditional Vietnamese Restaurants while still offering authentic and delicious Pho noodle soup and other Asian cuisines.

The only portals of entry are the nostrils and mouth/throat. In a global epidemic of this nature, it's almost impossible not coming into contact with H1N1 in spite of all precautions. Contact with H1N1 is not so much of a problem as proliferation is.

While you are still healthy and not showing any symptoms of H1N1 infection, in order to prevent proliferation, aggravation of symptoms and development of secondary infections, some very simple steps, not fully highlighted in most official communications, can be practiced (instead of focusing on how to stock N95 or Tamiflu):

1. Frequent hand-washing (well highlighted in all official communications).

2. "Hands-off-the-face" approach. Resist all temptations to touch any part of face (unless you want to eat or bathe.

3. *Gargle twice a day with warm salt water (use Listerine if you don't trust salt). *H1N1 takes 2-3 days after initial infection in the throat/nasal cavity to proliferate and show characteristic symptoms. Simple gargling prevents proliferation. In a way, gargling with salt water has the same effect on a healthy individual that Tamiflu has on an infected one. Don't under estimate this simple, inexpensive and powerful preventative method.

4. Similar to 3 above, *clean your nostrils at least once every day with warm salt water. *Not everybody may be good at using a Neti pot, but *blowing the nose hard once a day and swabbing both nostrils with cotton swabs dipped in warm salt water is very effective in bringing down viral population.*

5. *Boost your natural immunity with foods that are rich in Vitamin C. *If you have to supplement with Vitamin C tablets, make sure that it also has Zinc to boost absorption. (see Why the PHO?)

The Day of the Dead (El Día de los Muertos or All Souls' Day) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and by Latin Americans living in the United States and Canada. The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. The celebration occurs on November 1st and 2nd in connection with the Catholic holiday of All Saints' Day which occurs on November 1st and All Souls' Day which occurs on November 2nd. Traditions include building private altars honoring the deceased, using sugar skulls, marigolds, and the favorite foods and beverages of the departed, and visiting graves with these as gifts.

Scholars trace the origins of the modern holiday to indigenous observances dating back thousands of years, and to an Aztec festival dedicated to a goddess called Mictecacihuatl.

Similar holidays are celebrated in many parts of the world; for example, it's a public holiday (Dia de Finados) in Brazil, where many Brazilians celebrate by visiting cemeteries and churches. In Spain, there are festivals and parades, and at the end of the day, people gather at cemeteries and pray for their loved ones who have died. Similar observances occur elsewhere in Europe and in the Philippines, and similarly-themed celebrations appear in many Asian and African cultures.

Pho Citi Noodle Restaurant is Opening Store #3

October 5, 2009 - (CA, Los Angeles) -- Pho Citi Noodle Soups will be opening an additional location near the Americana at Brand complex in Glendale. This will be the third store in the popular restaurant chain, which is currently in the franchising process. The hip 24-hour noodle house, slated to open before December 2009 will feature modern and organic furnishings set in an upbeat and friendly environment. Pho Citi is a brand that sets itself apart from traditional Vietnamese Restaurants while still offering authentic and delicious Pho noodle soup and other Asian cuisines.

This third addition to the Pho Citi restaurant brand will mark the chain's 3rd store opening since January 2009. The first store was opened in January 2009 at the AMC 16 movie complex and has been a thriving anchor store after several failed restaurant openings in that location. "It goes to show how badly Glendale was really in need of a 24 hour restaurant offering moderately priced and delicious food," adds Sandra Park, Owner & Operator of Pho Citi. "We answered the call."

KTTV FOX 11 (myfoxla.com) - Meteorologist Rick Dickert provides the weather, traffic and breaking news from SkyFox during the FOX 11 Morning News and Good Day L.A. In 2000 he earned a Golden Mike Award for best traffic reporter in Los Angeles. He also accumulated a number of Emmys for his segment producing on Good Day L.A.

Rick began working at KTTV as an intern in 1990. He was hired as a production assistant shortly thereafter and went on to help launch the Fox 11 Morning News and Good Day LA in 1993. He began his on-air career in January of 1998 as the weekend meteorologist at KEYT, the ABC affiliate in Santa Barbara. Dickert joined the FOX 11 Morning News and Good Day L.A. teams in April 2005 after serving three years as the weekend weather anchor at FOX.

Dickert studied meteorology at San Jose State University and UCLA. He was elected a full member of the American Meteorological Society (AMS) in 1994 and is recognized as a meteorologist by the organization. Dickert also earned a degree in geography. In 2002, he was awarded the Television Seal of Approval by the AMS. In May of 2005, Rick was the first weathercaster in Los Angeles to be awarded the prestigious Certified Broadcast Meteorologist seal by the AMS. The seal is sought as a mark of distinction and a recognition of the achievement in the communication of scientific information. The AMS grants the CBM designation to broadcast meteorologists who meet established criteria for scientific competence and effective communication skills in their weather presentations. The CBM is a new program, launched in January 2005 as an upgrade to the Society’s Seal of Approval.

Dickert is also a member of the National Weather Association and earned their television seal of approval in 2003.

Bánh mì or bánh mỳ (English pronunciation: /ˈbʌnmiː/, Vietnamese: [ɓǎːɲ mî]) is a Vietnamese baguette made with wheat and rice flour, as well as a type of sandwich traditionally made with this type of baguette.[1] The sandwich is made up of thinly sliced pickled carrots and daikon, onions, cucumbers, cilantro, jalapeño peppers and meat or tofu. Popular bánh mì fillings include roasted or grilled pork, Vietnamese ham, pâté, mayonnaise, chicken, and head cheese. Most Banh Mi sandwiches contain a Vietnamese mayonnaise-like spread that is a mixture of egg yolk, cooking oil/butter, and sometimes spices.

Bánh mì is generally served in small shops and at some phở noodle eateries. Bánh mì shops can be found in many countries, especially in areas with a Vietnamese immigrant community. The contrasting flavors and textures of the sandwich — as well as its relatively low cost — make it a popular dish. In America, Bánh mì is sometimes referred to as a "Saigon Sub", a "Vietnamese Po' boy" (in the New Orleans ares), a "Vietnamese Hoagie" (in Philadelphia) or most commonly, a "Vietnamese Sandwich".

We'll upload the pics to our Gallery after Sept 20th. Everyone will participate in choosing the winner by voting on their favorite pic The top 3 pics with the most votes will then be displayed @ Pho Citi Noodle Restaurant in Burbank, CA. PHOto©s will be displayed for a minimum of 1 month with credit going to the photographer and/or your twitter acct name (optional). You need only read a few of our posts on this site and you’ll understand our passion for pho. We take our pho seriously. And personally, I’m not one to make fun at my favorite, beloved and respected chow. Certainly not in substance, not in name, and definitely not in pronunciation.

Fuh? foe? FO? Fu-uuuuuhh? PhuUUH? What the P…? Well, there is no funny stuff here. But pronouncing “pho” can be challenging if you don’t have the correct pho pronunciation to compare to.

Use your favorite search engine and you’ll find various ways that people suggest how to pronounce pho. If you care and search long enough you’ll discover one or two ways to say “pho” getting propagated by many people. Well guess what, regardless of how widely spread and popular these Internet versions are, and how well-intentioned the individuals may be, these “pho” versions are incorrect pronunciation.

Since my goal aims to stop further proliferation of such ’slanderous’ treatment of my favorite noodle dish called pho, I won’t mention them here to further the butchering of the word. Instead I’ll offer the following for your reading (and listening) pleasure.

First let’s set the record straight. I’m not a hard-liner. I believe in freedom and capitalism as the next sensible person. But I think we can all do better with pho pronunciation. It’s not difficult, and with minimal effort, proper guidance/demonstration and practice, you’ll impress a Vietnamese-speaking person or enjoy watching him/her in shock with such unexpected fluency and command of the language. Yes, no more “f…” or “ph…”, or whatever. So here goes.

Wikipedia correctly makes a distinction between Vietnamese and English versions of written and pronunciation of pho. That is not to say that it is necessarily acceptable or there is nothing more to it. Granted, written words and their pronunciations in other languages have been “Americanized” before (read ‘butchered’), so this is nothing new. But in this global economy it’s probably a good thing to try saying non-English words as correctly as possible. Hey anything to help foster friendship and understanding, right? And when it involves “pho“, it’s even more important to us.
